The CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme

A CITB Accredited Course.

The CITB-Construction Skills Site Safety Plus - Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) was devised to assist site managers and potential site managers, to develop knowledge, awareness and understanding of their legal, moral and social responsibilities in respect of health, safety and welfare on construction sites.

The SMSTS course is one of the most highly respected qualifications for persons who are responsible for the management of construction activities such as construction, building maintenance or facilities management. Many employers insist that all their site managers hold the certificate.

The certificates for all Site Safety Plus courses expires every five years. After this period runs out, certificate holders have to sit a refresher course to renew their qualification for a further five years.

About SMSTS

MSM Safety Management Services have been a CITB Construction Skills approved training provider since 1991.

With the new Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2007 (CDM) that came into effect in April 2007, it requires that all employers of construction workers ensure that they are competent in a range of health and safety issues, so receiving training on a regular basis is going to be essential.

The SMSTS scheme helps site managers and supervisors to:

  • Demonstrate their skills to contractors and clients.
  • Run a safer and more efficient site.
  • Identify and avoid potential hazards on site.
  • Prepare method statements, risk assessments and other statutory requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Other benefits include:

  • Flexibility for training providers to adapt the course content to suit candidate's needs.
  • Qualifying for CITB Grant - under the short course section of the CITB grant scheme.

SMSTS courses trains each individual in the essential points of Health and Safety and shows them how to measure Health and Safety performance on their own site. The interactive method of delivery of the course allows for discussion of the subject areas together with the development of risk assessments, methods statements and health and safety plans for construction activities. At the end of the course, each individual has to pass a test which qualifies them for the Construction Site Managers Safety Certificate.

The certificate expires every five years.
After this period runs out, certificate holders have to sit a two day refresher course to renew their qualification for a further five years.

The refresher course brings them up to date and improves awareness with recent developments in construction, legislation and health, safety, welfare and environmental issues and helps site managers face the responsibilities imposed on them by new legislations and working practices.

Recognition by other organisations

Successful completion of the Scheme, confirmed by the award of the Construction Site Manager's Safety Certificate, is also recognised by the following professional organisations.
